Caroline Estes

Social Scientist

Summary:

With over ten years of work in higher education and K-12 programs and 18 years in hospitality, I have developed a passion and expertise for creating inclusive and affirming spaces for people of all identities and backgrounds. I design and deliver evidence-based communication training programs that empower, educate, and activate participants in social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (JEDI).

Diversity Statement
Author’s note: This statement will grow and change, as society is not static, and I approach this with a growth mindset.

My goal is to facilitate communication that promotes positive change and enhances the quality of living. I rely on evidence-based research, mindfulness strategies, yoga, and storytelling to achieve this. Throughout my journey in advocacy, I've learned that it's important to stay true to my values and authentic voice, even if it means exploring new pathways. I've also come to realize that it takes courage and authenticity to enter a broken system with the intent to change it from within. Unfortunately, many people are often told that they cannot achieve something because of their disability, ethnicity, gender, orientation, social location, or race. This oppressive fixed mindset can be a dangerous barrier to progress. As a scholarly community, we must work together to break down these barriers and tap into the potential of all intellectuals, thereby unlocking humanity's collective knowledge.

I aim to catalyze change by researching and implementing sustainable accommodations for learners, specifically learners with invisible disabilities.  I do this by creating a collaborative, inclusive, affirming, accessible work environment and education system; my Leadership Development helps the organization build a diversity and inclusion policy that is sustainable and equitable for stakeholders and employees respectively.

Using multiple and established approaches to adult learning, I design and deliver needs-based communication training programs tailored to forming equitable people solutions for organizations following investigative analysis practices (SWOT, Needs Assessments, Likert, etc..). I design inclusive and justice-minded learning experiences that empower participants with the knowledge and skills to perform their best– co-facilitating anti-ableist, healing workspaces where all bodies and minds are welcome and supported.

Empowering each generation to think critically- with respect for humans at all intersections of identity- my work as a communication trainer and sociologist fosters a sense of belonging for clients and stakeholders. My storytelling creates opportunities for self-discovery and critical inquiry. Marginalized voices must be amplified by those who hold the power to end dehumanizing language and behaviors and cultivate equitable spaces for all humans.

Across sectors, I serve as a resource for creating inclusive and affirming spaces, drawing from my lived experience as a disabled woman in a society not designed for “people like me.” My research and training engage in opportunities that empower, educate, and activate adult learners and students in social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (JEDI)—specializing in conflict management and reconciliation practices leading to anti-racism and anti-ableism practices.

Offering disability User Experience subject matter knowledge to develop reparative justice objectives, strategies, programs, policies, and other initiatives that lead to a sustainable company culture. I use qualitative and quantitative analysis to record strategies for transforming social systems. Then, I apply science-backed approaches to improve institutional outcomes based on ethnographic and peer-reviewed research findings.

With unyielding determination, my work improves sustainable social outcomes through the power of accessible resources for leisure, work, and education that include all individuals, promoting belonging and success. I contribute to research that reveals how intersections of identity impact communication and outcomes for minoritized people. Still, it is up to each member of an organization to make spaces accessible and inclusive for all bodies and minds.

NOTABLE RESEARCH PROJECT

Cripping Technology Leonardo Humanities Lab - Researcher, Project Manager, website creator, and podcaster for disability learning strategies worldbuilding research lab. The project aims to implement a universal design for learning to promote accessibility in education. The research explores how art and technology, including worldbuilding, can deconstruct and reimagine how we build our world, from architecture to social structures, around the idea of a stable and idealized human body.

Using my education to inspire a culture of resilience among the Disability community and beyond, I find Communication Studies and Family Life Science Education invaluable to the healing and the education process for all. I also enjoy researching dialectical tensions among in-law relationships. I want to contribute more research to help communication between parents and their adult newly-wed children, supporting lasting marriage relationships. I am currently Researching How Yoga works as a communication tool, Arts as disability justice, and the impact of Universal Accommodations for College Pathways students from financially insecure communities.
